Tricks, cruising or distance? There is a board for that.

Madd Gear skateboards range from a 22" that fits a school bag to a 36" longboard. Every one arrives built and ready to ride. Plus grind rails to practise on at home.

Ask what they want to do with it

Length is not the first question. What they want to do with it is.

Two of our boards are both 31 inches and they are completely different machines. One is built to learn to skate on, the other to cover ground. So start with what they want to do.

Three kinds of board

What do they want to do?

Learn, and try tricks

22" Locker Board · 31" LTR. Double kicktail: both ends turn up, so it can pop, ollie and ride either way round.

Get places

28" Cruiser. Bigger, softer wheels and one kicktail, built to roll over rough footpath.

Distance and smooth carving

31" and 36" Drop Through · 36" Longboard. Low, stable, and easy to push for a long way.

The numbers

What the numbers on a skateboard actually mean

  • Length. The inch number in each board’s name is how long the deck is, nose to tail. 22" is about 56cm, 28" about 71cm, 31" about 79cm and 36" about 91cm. Shorter is easier to carry and turn; longer is steadier and easier to push.
  • Ply. How many layers of maple are pressed into the deck. More ply is stiffer and stronger. Ours run 7, 8 and 9 ply. The 9-ply LTR is the stiffest.
  • Truck width. The metal axle the wheels bolt to. Wider is more stable, narrower turns quicker. Ours run from 5" on the Cruiser and LTR up to 7" on the Drop Throughs.
  • Wheel size. Bigger wheels roll over rough ground better and carry speed further. 50mm is a trick wheel; 70mm eats a bumpy footpath.
  • ABEC rating. A precision number for the bearings. Higher spins a bit more freely, and honestly it matters far less than the wheels do.
  • Grip. Every board has grip tape, which is sandpaper glued on.

The one that decides how it feels: the kicktail. Two kicks means tricks. One kick or none means cruising.

The range

The boards, and the grind rails

22" Locker BoardThe first board

Ages 5 to 12 · up to 100kg · fits a school bag

22" Locker Board

Small enough to carry everywhere, which is the whole point. A 7-ply maple double kicktail deck on composite trucks, light enough for a school bag or a locker. Both ends kick, so it is a real trick board rather than a toy.

  • 7-ply maple, double kicktail
  • Composite trucks · 50mm wheels · ABEC-5
  • Non-abrasive printed grip tape
  • Arrives fully assembled

28" Cruiser

Wide, forgiving and quiet. A 7.5" wide 8-ply maple deck with a single kicktail, so there is proper room to stand and enough tail to hop a kerb. 62mm wheels on 5" aluminium trucks make it smooth over rough footpath rather than rattly.

  • 8-ply maple, 7.5" wide, single kicktail

Ages 5 to 12 · up to 100kg · also called a popsicle

31" LTR

LTR stands for Learn To Ride. In plain words, it is the board you learn to skate on. A 9-ply maple double kick concave deck, the stiffest board we sell, which is what you want underfoot while someone is finding their feet.

You will also hear this shape called a popsicle, after the deck outline. Same thing.

  • 9-ply maple, double kick concave
  • 5" composite trucks · 50mm wheels · ABEC-5

31" Drop ThroughThe distance one

Ages 5 and up · up to 100kg

31" Drop Through

Same length as the LTR and a completely different board. The trucks mount through the deck, so it sits lower than the wheels. That makes pushing easier and the whole thing steadier at speed. Huge 70mm wheels, so rough seal stops mattering.

Better for getting somewhere than for tricks.

36" Drop Through

The same idea as the 31" Drop Through, with a longer deck. The trucks mount through the deck so it sits low and stable, and 70mm wheels roll over rough seal. Made for the ride to school, the boardwalk and the campus.

Grind railsLearn to grind at home

Ages 7+ · up to 100kg · skateboards, scooters and skates

Grind rails

Bring the skate park home. A practice rail for skateboards, scooters and skates. The legs adjust, so it starts low while they learn and goes up as they get better.

Two lengths, 55" and 99". Unlike the boards, the rails take a few minutes to put together, and come apart just as fast to move.

  • 55: 55" long
  • 99: 99" long
  • Adjustable height, non-slip legs
  • Quick to put together

Out of the box

Nothing to build

Every board arrives fully assembled and ready to ride. No tools, no trucks to bolt on, no waiting. Take it out of the box and go.

The grind rails are the exception: they take a few minutes to put together.

Questions we get asked

The things people ask before they buy

Which board should I get for a beginner?

If they want to learn to skate, the 31" LTR. Learn To Ride is the name on the box, and it is exactly that: a stiff 9-ply double kick deck and light trucks. If they are small or you want something they can carry, the 22" Locker Board does the same job in a smaller package.

What is the difference between the 31" LTR and the 31" Drop Through?

They are the same length and nothing else. The LTR has a kick at both ends and is built for tricks. The Drop Through mounts its trucks through the deck so it sits lower, with much bigger 70mm wheels, and is built to cover distance comfortably. Tricks on one, travel on the other.

Do they need assembling?

The boards, no. Every board arrives fully assembled and ready to ride. The grind rails take a few minutes to put together.

Can they use the grind rail with a scooter?

Yes. The rails are for skateboards, scooters and skates. The legs adjust, so start low and raise it as they get better.

Do you sell skateboard parts?

Our skateboards are sold as complete setups only, so we do not carry individual decks, trucks, wheels or bearings for them.

What is a kicktail?

The turned-up end of the deck. Two kicktails means it can do tricks and ride either way round. One means it is built for cruising. It is the single thing that most changes how a board feels.

Is it too big or too small for them?

Go by what they want to do first. Within that, a shorter board is easier to carry and turn, a longer one is more stable and easier to push. The ages on each board are a guide, not a rule.

What surface can they ride on?

Smooth, flat and dry. Skateparks, and around home. Bigger wheels, like the 70mm on the Drop Throughs, handle rough seal far better than the 50mm trick wheels do.

How long is the warranty?

Two years. Every board and rail here is Madd Gear, and you deal with our own team.
